field College, the community, the country, and the world! So far that has meant a life-saving doctor, an international political figure, and a professional athlete…and many more. Bakersfield College’s impact on society is apparent and should be celebrated! To the right, you see Bakersfield College alum and Texas Rangers pitcher Colby Lewis receiving his medallion at our football game!

We have presented awards to alumni, former employees, and community members over the last months, and will present more at upcoming events.

Here are a few excerpts:

Every business and every citizen is touched by what we do. Patients in hospitals are cared for by our nurses, and children watched over by our skilled, child care providers. Across generations we support the dream of advanced education of our students; our first graduate, Josephine Chase, went to UC Berkeley; 100 years later her great-great niece and nephew, Shelby and Colby Chase, are entering Bakersfield College with wide eyes and big dreams……….

I invite you to our Centennial Gala on Oct. 25, the night before the BC homecoming football game, for a proud celebration of this legacy………..Call the Bakersfield College Foundation at 395-4800 to reserve your seats.

I also invite you to join me on Sept. 14 for our football team’s home opener at Memorial Stadium against archrival Mt. San Antonio College. Wear your Renegade red! That week, we’ll also celebrate the 59th annual Alumni Association BBQ at Stramler Park. Get your tickets by calling 395-4326.

BC has no fewer than18 different sports. Check them all out at www.gogades.com. In fact BC has a rich menu of events for all — the Renegade Room, which is the learning laboratory for our culinary students, our performing arts programs, the gallery that displays our fine arts, the Levan Institute and the Levan lecture series, the Planetarium and the GardenFest, just to name a few.

Nick promotes the centennial year events:

Be on the lookout for announcements about the Centennial Ball on Oct. 25. If you take a look at the BC Centennial homepage (bakersfieldcollege.edu/centennial), you’ll see how many college presidents it takes to cut a cake. Pretty amazing that they were all in agreement on where to make that first cut.

And then teaches us about blue moons:

There are three meanings, none of which has anything to do with the actual color of the moon. In the first meaning, the blue moon is the third full moon of four full moons in a season of the year where the computation for this starts with our spring equinox around March 21. Most seasons will have just three full moons in them, but because the lunar phase cycle is 29.5 days long and that time period doesn’t fit nicely into our 365.25-day year, there will be occasionally a season that has four full moons………

Today, April 20, 2013, the campus was alive with the annual Garden festival. This event is always a highlight of the year for campus and community, with food, performances, booths with information and a wide range of plants and garden goods for sale.

This year’s Garden festival was a special one marking the start of BC’s year of activities commemorating the college’s 100th year. [For more on the Centennial Year celebrations check out http://www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/centennial/%5D.  Attendance was higher than it had ever been and the atmosphere was full of energy as students, staff and community members talked, walked and shopped.

It was great to see youngsters from the Newman center painting the faces of children who were queuing up.  I attempted to get in line to get the BC logo painted on my face before the media blitz but the line was long and i felt self conscious of being the only adult in the line.  so I finally snuck away.

At 1:00 there was a ceremony to mark the planting of the one hundredth commemorative tree – over the course of the past year ninety-nine commemorative trees have been planted, a wide variety of different trees that will help make the campus an arboretum to enjoy and learn from. The one hundredth is a large oak tree symbolizing stability and selfless giving of shelter, strength and vitality.

The college had a booth with the Centennial yearbook on sale for $20.13 (get it?…). This is a beautiful book full of pictures, stories and history of BC and I bought a couple of copies and was grateful to be able to have them signed by the author.  Here you see Bonnie Suderman and Becky Whitson with the author.

Many thanks are due for all the hard work that made this year’s festival so wonderful: to all of our community members that pitch in and bring life to the event; to the Ag department that does everything from staffing the show, offering “plant sitting,” identifying plants, solving garden problems, and offering informational presentations; to Chef Coyle and Chef Davis who really outdid themselves in making wonderful food for the event (though unfortunately I was too late to try the ribs special).

Special thanks are in order for Sally Sterns, who has been working for many months to coordinate the complex activities needed to make this event such a success. Sally, you rock!

Here is Sally the day before the big event.  I wandered over to the horticulture lab to see if Sally was surviving and here she was hard at work with her students with energy and high anticipation for the big day.

March 23, 2013.

Yesterday, March 23rd, the Ag department hosted the planting of 50 trees, the second half of the 100 trees in celebration of our Centennial year (https://www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/centennial/calendar.asp). Actually, as of yesterday, we have planted 99 of the 100 trees, saving the last tree to be planted during the Garden Fest on April 20th. http://891418088421670332.weebly.com/. It will be an Oak tree, and according to Lindsey Ono, Chair of the Ag department, a tree that is known for its beauty, strength and longevity.

The Tree Foundation of Kern (http://www.urbanforest.org/) sponsored yesterday’s tree planting of the Centennial trees. The trees were donated by contributions from Trans West and PG & E. The purpose for the variety of trees selected is to create a shade walk on campus, beautify and create a selection of trees for an arboretum. The arboretum status will allow us to also hold industry tests for the professional groups such as California Landscape Contractors Association,  California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers, and the International Society of Arborists.

It is always great to see our community come to its college and yesterday, march 23rd, they certainly did, with enthusiasm to plant the 49 trees.  The Ag department had the ground prepped ahead of time with the trees in their 5-gallon containers ready for the volunteers to plant.

Our group of five, Sonette Russell (Forestry major transferring to Humboldt State at the end of this term), her nephew Wyatt Wynn, Neeley Hatridge (faculty from the Communications department), Janet Tarjan (math faculty) and myself had responsibility for a tall beautiful Russian Olive tree.  I must confess that I did a lot more standing around than working with the shovel 🙂
